Meet Martin
Art has an important part to play in connecting people to their environment. Meet Martin Hale a local artist who was inspired by Ballarat East and this website.
Martin says “The history excerpt by Weston Bate and the high quality content/design and purpose of the BE Net combined with the recent Canadian Corridor meeting inspired me to try and produce a large canvas interpreting the community action back-dropped by and links to the history of Ballarat. I hope to exhibit the piece along with others in a group show presented by the South Street Art Studio Professional Practice Group later in the year at the Backspace Gallery.”

Introducing Martin Hale, Ballarat Visual Artist (operating from the South Street Art Studio)
I am inspired by the natural and built elements of the world around me and artistically explore both using my spatial background as a prism to view and interpret themes and topics that surround and link them.
You may well ask what does spatial mean?
I have trained and practised for almost four decades as a licensed land surveyor and spatial scientist. Accordingly surveying and mapping, both disciplines of the spatial sciences, have honed my observation of land forms and their spatial relationship to human activity such as urban development.
I am frequently made aware that formal spatial representations such as maps, their symbology, interpretation and use, are a mystery to many people. My art is evolving a visual language which aims to link aspects of our world with spatial representations of its various elements enabling a deeper understanding of both to be realised.
The interaction between humans and land and their impact, one upon the other, features in my current art work theme titled “The Hills Are Alive”.
My latest work currently under development, titled “East – West”, is dedicated to the Canadian Forest Corridor.
