Base Station at 328 Eureka Street
As some Easties are aware Telstra as looking to erect a bast station at 328 Eureka Street. It would be great to have a reasonable respectful discussion about this, as it affects those living beneath it, and those who are desperate to have a better reception in Ballarat East.
Please make your comments below, and just remember:
- If you don’t want it here, are there other options and opportunities for places to erect it?
- Be respectful and tackle the issue, not your neighbour
- Use language that will make your grandparents proud.
Click here to see the article about it in the Courier – http://www.thecourier.com.au/story/2097779/telstra-phone-tower-plan-angers-eureka-street-residents/
Some residents are gathering to discuss this issue, and if you would like to be put in contact with the organisers please email info@ballarateast.net
Some residents got this brochure which might answer some questions your have, click here for PDF about the Telstra Tower, or see image below.

I must say of all the places to place this tower this is the most logical , on a former industrial site, while all this area is covered by a heritage overlay the owners of the old george farmers site must be allowed to convert this site to mixed use as per its zoning, mixed use zoning allows for housing, shops, medical center etc etc. The owners must retain the original road frontage buildings as per the heritage overlay as a historic display of its heritage to ballarat. This building cannot be allowed to go to wreck and ruin as we have seen prior the the current owners and people must allow the owners to convert it while retaining its historical past use.
People were caught out because they didn’t have phone reception during fires…. So what’s more important…. Children and families lives or a pole? Hmmm we all use mobile phones. Personally I would rather look at a pole then look or hear about a bush fire where people died as they were Uncontactable due to the fires. I don’t particularly like te tower but I have no objection when it will save the lives of the people around us.
Resident of East Ballarat
It really is appalling that Telstra is proposing to build a 35 metre mobile phone tower/monopole in the middle of beautiful heritage Eureka street.
Look at where they plan to situate the pole, it is literally right in the middle of residences at the Queen street south/ Eureka street intersection at 328 Eureka Street.
Not only will it affect the visual amenity and heritage of this wonderful street but cause great health and financial concerns for residents. There is also the York street kindergarten and Pinarc centre nearby!
Did I forget to mention that these humongous towers are extremely ugly and will be visual from the Victoria/ Queen street intersections and all along Queen street south, York street and of course Eureka! They are plain and robotic like, and oppose against all heritage restrictions imposed throughout the area, destroying the wonderful heritage history of the street.
I object against this proposal and believe it is extremely unnecessary and deteriorating to the heritage and visual amenity of Eureka street. I am local to this area and believe it is not fairly beneficial to all residents. I myself do not use Telstra as a network supplier and am therefore no better off to have a phone tower in the middle of a beautiful street, however see myself as worse off as this would ruin the surrounding view of my home and our local area.
It will look terrible where it is planned to be situated. As soon as you get to Victoria street and approach a/the main intersection on the way to M.A.D.E and Eureka street from Queen street south you’ll see it clear as day.
Non residential? The Ballarat Residential Infill Study has earmarked the old George Farmers site for high density housing. Established treeline? Large trees in Ballarat East are endangered and cannot be considered as a permanent screen.
I have lived on Eureka St for 13 years and my family and I are still renovating our 1928 house in negotiation with council to suit the heritage overlay Street we live in. I feel devastated that the visual amenity I have come to love in Eureka St is now threatened.
Appreciable in the dictionary means “Able to be seen, noticeable or pronounced”
The pamphlet emphasized from the stockade there will be no appreciable visual impact.
MM. I’m not sure how you can not see this type of structure in Eureka Street. I’m certain it will be the first thing my children will see as they go into our backyard to play. I agree with Cindy and will be objecting to this proposal.

Please see below an email I’ve just written to object to the proposed Telstra base station for 328 Eureka St. It would be greatly appreciated if you could investigate the proposal further; and support the objections I have outlined below.
Thanks,
To whom it may concern,
As a resident of Eureka St – I wish to express my objection to the proposed Telstra base station at 328 Eureka St Ballarat East.
The reasons behind my objection are as follows:
*Eureka St – including the area in question – is in a heritage overlay area and the tower will impose on the heritage nature of the street scene.
*Residents in the area have chosen Ballarat East for it’s heritage character and the tower will be in clear view of the surrounding blocks.
*I am concerned with the actual visual impact despite that the proposal states that there is “no appreciable visual impact”.
*When looking towards the proposed site of the base station- a 40-60 metre tower will be definitely seen from Eureka St, Otway St Sth and York St.
*The tower will have an impact on the value of the properties in the area which currently have views both towards the city and the surrounding bushland towards Canadian.
Although the proposed site is in a small industrial pocket of the neighbourhood; it is totally surrounded by residences. Please note my objections.
Thank you.
