Canadian Corridor Update
Update for the Friends of the Canadian Corridor (FoCC) February 2015
Hello friends, This is the first update for 2015.
This year should be a very interesting year with expected movement on the establishment of a Canadian State Park and the further work on the City of Ballarat Strategy which covers planning issues within the Canadian Corridor.
Canadian State Park.
The FoCC has had contact with the renamed Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning. The FoCC are expecting to have an initial meeting with the DELWP within the next couple of weeks to discuss the proposed park.
Woodmans Hill.
The Woodmans Hill Master Plan involving development and the Habitat link across the western Highway at Woodmans Hill was presented to Council on January 28th. For the first time in Ballarat’s planning scheme contains reference and actions regarding the habitat link between the Canadian forest and the Creswick Forest.
Ballarat strategy.
Our response was delivered to the COB in mid January. It included extra tree plantings for the idea of the urban forest and increased protection for the Canadian Corridor within Brown Hill and Warrenheip localities.
First meeting of the year.
The first meeting of the FoCC will be held on Thursday February 26th 5pm at Federation University in Room Y 135 in Building Y (Science Building) Click here for map: FedUni_MtHelen_Sept2014. Please put this date in your calendar and all FoCC members are invited to attend. These meetings are where the directions of the FoCC are decided and everybody’s input is valuable
Items for discussion:
- Forest issues for discussion with the DELWP
- Request to the COB re cycle and walking planning in the corridor
- A public response to the Woodmans Hill master plan
- Weed control of the ex plantation areas
- Request to the COB to undertake a formal investigation and report on the boundaries, maintenance needs and possible actions to enhance the Habitat Corridor between the Creswick Forest and the Canadian Forest.
