Good Morning Ballarat East from the resident Kookaburras
I heard the beautiful sound of our local kookaburras this morning. Perhaps it is a sign that Spring is just around the corner. The Laughing Kookaburra is native to eastern Australia and breeds in Spring. They nest in hollow trees with the hollows up to 2 feet deep. This is why old trees are so important in wildlife corridors such as Ballarat East. An Aboriginal legend says that the kookaburra’s laugh is a signal to the sky spirits to light the great fire, the sun, in the morning and to put it out at night.
This is a photo of the kookaburra in my back yard. My children’s swing set shows how close these beautiful birds can live to residential activity. You can also see the old tree in the picture, required for habitat. We can mix wildlife habitat and residential homes if we get creative!
