Know your street!

Often when developers move into the area they remain unaware of the history of a street, an area, a neighbourhood. Its our job to inform them until they listen!

Here is a great resource for residents, new and old, to help you work out some of the heritage in your street…

Federation University hosts a community wiki, like an online notice board that allows people to add, modify, or delete content in collaboration with others. The wiki is called the Ballarat and District Industrial Heritage Project. You can search for people, artifacts, objects and streets. Now the ‘streets’ index is really interesting.

  1. Go the the wiki: https://bih.federation.edu.au/index.php/Ballarat_and_District_Industrial_Heritage_Project
  2. Click on Street Locations under the heading of Local History Research: or click here
  3. And you will see a street alphabet, click on the letter your street starts with. e.g If you want to search in Eureka St, click on Street Locations – E

Then you will see a list of businesses, people or industries that were or still are present in Eureka Street.

Awesome eh? It gets better! If you want to search by the type of industry, then click on the ‘contents’ link on the left of the page, and you can search for any! Fabulous. If you’d like to contribute something to the site email us info@ballarateast.net Thanks Federation University.
